In their own words
Overall, the actual move went fairly well. The crew arrived about 15 minutes late, but they worked efficiently and had everything moved into our new place in about four hours. Unfortunately, that’s where the positive experience ended. The movers broke three stone steps at the front of my building. There is no dispute about what happened, it was entirely their fault.
I will be updating this as the process goes along for full transparency. This service moved my roommate today and a member of the team stole money from my purse hanging by the door. I’m moving in a few days myself and had the cash to tip my own movers. A few hours after the movers left, I found my purse open and my money gone. It was in my purse a couple hours before they came over.
Unfortunately, I cannot justify giving Bookstore Movers any more than 2 stars. I hired Bookstore Movers this past week for a 1-bedroom move within DC from NoMa to Navy Yard. I discovered and decided to hire them due to their overwhelming positive reviews online (Reddit, Google, etc.), which is why this experience was extremely disappointing. Unfortunately, the overall move experience and value was extremely lacking.
If I could give them a zero I would. The guys are great and friendly but as far as taking care of your stuff forget it. The most simple of moves one floor to another. The only thing they had to do was move furniture, a few boxes and it took them under two hours; however, they destroyed every piece of furniture I own! How the hell do you put a good size hole through a leather sofa, how the hell do you scratch and dent iron. They certainly did.
Movers were nice and respectful. My review is strictly about the execution of service. Movers were on a previous job which took longer than expected which I understand, but they ended up arriving almost 2 hours late (they kept me updated as to the delay which I appreciated). Right before they said they were outside I was about to call the company and cancel the move b/c of the delay. I enjoyed speaking with the movers and they took care of my things which I appreciated.
Movers showed up on time but were not respectful of my things and rushed. When I gave them direction such as not rolling a marble table as it would chip, they were dismissive. Likewise when I asked that multiple people carry a table to not damage it and my walls. For some items I offered to assist in carrying as I felt two people needed to carry the item vs one. They declined and said they wound get one of the other two movers to help, then at times proceeded to move the item alone when I was out of view.
Hi Kevin, Thank you for taking the time to document your experience and frustrations. We’ve been in contact with you since this move originally occurred back in February and even offered to provide you with a discount on a future move.
TLDR: I am incredibly disgusted + disappointed by my moving experience on 2/24 with the manager, Jason or Justin. I asked to speak to the manager with a problem during my move and was told, "why are you speaking to me aggressively, I don't understand. You are being aggressive". Never in my 10 year corporate career have I been called aggressive. Apparently a woman being assertive about an issue she is having is deemed aggressive. Apparently, speaking up makes me aggressive?
It's been years since I booked a moving service from Bookstore Movers for a 1b apartment. TL;DR: They did a fair and efficient job, but the workers were very rude and impatient. Won't recommend. I had only a couple of (~15) medium boxes, and was shouted at by a worker when I initially told them I have 12, and found a few left. He shouted "Hey listen, we can't do it if you keep having more boxes" (What??) And after they moved all boxes onto the truck, I was still moving some packed garbage (in boxes).

In their own words
Great work. Lowest cost estimate that I received. I had to call to confirm it was such a good price. These guys work on email and call backs, so calling requires leaving a voicemail and waiting for them to get back to you. They always returned my calls and my emails promptly. We amended my estimate based on the feedback from the estimators, still lower cost than everyone else. I opted to pay for a bigger truck and more crew in order to shorten the trip and ensure they would not need a second load.
I have moved every year for several years and decided to hire movers this time around. I am absolutely blown away by the quality of service from Bookstore Movers and will look to them first the next time I move. The cost of hiring them was well worth every last cent! Patrick, Renaldo, Breland, and Niiwayo were incredibly kind, efficient, careful, and EXCELLENT at communicating with each other and with me.
Outstanding! Moving is a stressful process, but hiring Bookstore Movers takes the stress out of moving. They were fantastic from the get-go and communication impeccable. In fact, all communication up until the movers arrived was via email and took care of all of my needs. I knew what was happening and when and kept them informed of my packing and what would need to be moved and what I was moving myself.
I am very impressed with Bookstore Movers. I love this company! Bookstore Movers was the 4th company I had tried to do business with. The others had very poor customer service ---- mostly non-responsive. One of the 3 was a larger company that advertised quite frequently on the radio. Someone recommended Bookstore Movers. I emailed them in the early afternoon, providing what I had to move and asked from a quote. I received an email, within an hour, asking me to go online and complete a form.
